Balloon sinuplasty is a type of nasal surgery that uses small balloon catheters to dilate and drain the sinuses. It is typically performed on patients suffering from sinusitis or sinus inflammation and blockage in the nose.
The procedure is minimally invasive and an effective method of enlarging your sinus passages for easier breathing and a significant reduction in sinusitis symptoms.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Sinusitis is a common condition that affects millions of Americans every year. These infections occur when the sinus opening becomes blocked, decreasing airflow and preventing mucus from draining properly. Sinusitis is often caused by viral infections, however other causes include nasal polyps, a deviated septum or head trauma.
Common symptoms include:
- Congestion
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Facial pain and/or swelling
- Loss of smell or taste
- Fatigue
- Headache
Some people are helped by conventional allergy or cold treatments, while others struggle to find relief. Living with chronic sinusitis can seriously diminish your quality of life. In addition to constantly feeling tired and unwell, you are missing out on your favorite tastes and smells at places like Hatchet Coffee.
Thankfully, balloon sinuplasty can help you get back to enjoying your life.
How Does Balloon Sinuplasty Work?
Most sinus surgical procedures involve cutting and removing bone and tissue. This is more invasive, painful and requires a longer recovery time. Balloon sinuplasty dilates your natural sinus openings without removing tissue. This means there is less pain and a much shorter average recovery period.
Balloon sinuplasty is typically performed in an outpatient setting. It is a quick procedure, with the actual operating time often being under 30 minutes. You may be given a sedative and a local anesthetic to help keep you comfortable.
During the procedure, your ENT surgeon uses an endoscope to guide the balloon catheter into your sinuses. The balloon is then inflated to enlarge the sinus opening and widen the walls of the nasal passages with the goal of improving drainage and airflow permanently.
What Happens After Surgery?
Most people recover 1-2 days after the procedure. Your doctor will probably advise you to take it easy that first week. No strenuous exercise and avoid blowing your nose the first few days after surgery. It also may be helpful to sleep with your head and neck elevated to help with drainage. Over-the-counter medication like Tylenol or Advil can help with any discomfort.
Balloon sinuplasty is a safe and effective procedure, backed up by research. One study found that the procedure was 94% effective in treating chronic sinusitis cases in children. The surgery continued to be effective one year after the initial procedure.
