Nasal polyps are soft, painless, teardrop-shaped growths that form on the lining of the nasal passages and sinuses. They usually form as the result of chronic inflammation, like if you have allergies and frequently spend time at Fred Fletcher Park. If your nasal polyps are causing pressure, congestion, drainage, loss of smell or snoring and do not respond to other treatments, surgery may be necessary to remove them. Below we review everything you need to know about nasal polyp removal aftercare and recovery.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Nasal Polyp Removal?
After nasal polyp removal, you can usually return to work within one week and all regular activities after three weeks. However, it may take a month or two for you to feel completely normal again, and you’ll need to attend regular doctor’s visits for at least three to four months after surgery. The body’s natural response to trauma after nasal polyps are removed also contribute to the post-surgery outcomes.
What Can I Expect After Nasal Polyp Removal?
After nasal polyp removal, you can expect:
- Bleeding. It’s normal to have bloody discharge for three to five days after surgery, especially when you irrigate the sinuses. You can use Afrin spray to manage bleeding; if this doesn’t work, you should contact your doctor.
- Pain. Expect nasal and sinus pressure and aching for several days after surgery. This should be manageable with extra-strength Tylenol or the pain medication prescribed by your doctor.
- Fatigue. It’s normal to feel very tired and fatigued for about a week after surgery, which is why we recommend taking at least this much time off work.
What Should I Avoid After Nasal Polyp Removal?
After nasal polyp removal, you should avoid:
- Blowing your nose. Avoid this for at least 10 days after surgery, or else you may experience heavy bleeding.
- Straining. Don’t strain or partake in strenuous activity for at least seven days after surgery. At this time, you can begin 50% of your exercise regimen, then you can resume 100% after two weeks.
- Using steroid nasal sprays. If you took a steroid nasal spray prior to surgery, avoid using it for at least two weeks after to allow the lining of your nasal passages and sinuses to heal.
What Should I Do After Nasal Polyp Removal?
After nasal polyp removal, you should:
- Attend all follow-up visits. These are essential to ensure proper care and healing.
- Use a saline nasal spray. Misting the nasal passageways with saline spray every two to three hours after surgery will make you more comfortable.
- Irrigate the sinuses. Using a sinus rinse kit at least twice daily will be soothing and clear out debris.
